Srilanka Passport Information

Srilankan Government issues Srilankan passports to its citizens in order to facilitate their travel abroad. The Controller of Immigration and Emigration is the only authorized body to issue Srilankan passports. Even the Srilankan Missions in foreign countries are entitled to issue only emergency travel documents and endorse passports. Only Srilankans by descent or by registration are eligible for applying for a Srilankan passport.

There are different types of passports issued by the Srilankan Government. Ordinary passports are issued to the Srilankan nationals in general to facilitate international travel. Official and Diplomatic passports are issued to government officials, diplomats and ministers who go abroad on official mission representing the Srilankan government.

Further Emergency Certificates are issued to the Srilankans when they have to take up an emergency trip to India and Nepal. This Emergency Certificate is also issued for Srilankans who embark on a pilgrimage to Haj and Umrah. Identity certificates are issued to those who live in Srilanka though his or her nationality is not established. These Identity Certificates are valid across the globe. Under special circumstances, Srilankan government is known to issue Non Machine Readable Passports to its citizens.

Whenever the passport is lost, a complaint should be lodged in the nearest police station and the police report should be attached while applying for a new passport. Whenever the passport is lost or stolen abroad, either the out pass or NMRP should be acquired and this should be attached while applying for a new passport. Srilankan passport is valid for 10 year but if there is no space for visas or a passport within this 10 year period, then a new passport can be acquired. Application forms for passports are available at the consulate which can be obtained by sending a requisition along with a self addressed envelope and a photocopy of the old passport.
