There are four different types of passport issued in Belgium. The standard passport is issued to Belgium citizens in general in order to travel abroad for work, study, business or vacation. The Diplomatic passport is issued to the Belgian Royal Family members, ministers, top government officials, diplomats and other representatives of Belgian government. Service passport is issued to civil servants when they are sent abroad for official reasons within the federal public service by the Belgian authorities.
During emergency temporary passport is issued whose validity expires in 6 months. This temporary is differentiated from the rest of the passports through a dark green cover. Apart from the above four types of passport, Belgian diplomatic authorities in the embassies and consulates abroad are entitled to issue Emergency Travel Document when a passport is lost during an international travel. Though the color of this document is similar to the standard passport (Burgundy color) it has only 6 sheets.
Belgian passports have a burgundy cover similar to the standard European Union design. The Belgian smaller coat of arms is emblazoned in the center of the front cover. The words “European Union” and “Kingdom of Belgium” is inscribed in four languages namely Dutch, French, German and English above the coat of arms. Below the coat of arms, the word “Passport” is again inscribed in four languages. Below this the standard biometric symbol is seen in the Belgian passport. According to the affiliation with the lingual community of the passport holder, the sequence of the languages Dutch-French-German is altered.
The citizens of Belgium enjoy the privilege of visiting more than 100 countries in various continents either visa-free or with a visa on arrival. Further the Belgians need not produce their passport to visit within European Economic area, and a number of other European nations. They only need to produce their ID cards.
