University of Mumbai
Earlier known as the University of Bombay, one of the oldest and first three Universities of India, it was established in 1857. A result of the “Wood’s Education Dispatch” the University changed its name to the University of Mumbai consequent upon the renaming of the metro. With a history that goes back 150 years, the University which in the beginning focused only on under graduate levels and examinations subsequently moved its attention to research and post-graduate level of education.
Ranked 8th in the 2011 University Web Rankings, India , the University boasts of two sprawling campuses of area 230 acres and 13 acres, with 1.25 million square feet of built-up area, 22 thousand sq. feet of class-rooms and 84 thousand sq feet of laboratory space. It has two post-graduate centres, 354 affiliated colleges and 36 Departments.
The faculties of the University include Faculty of Art, Commerce, Law, Science, Technology and Academy for Administrative Services,Alkesh Dinesh Mody Institute of Management Studies, Centre for Extra-Mural studies, Department of Student welfare, Vidyapeeth Vidhyarthi Bhavan, Dr. Ambedkar Center for Social Justice, Garware Institute of Career Education & Development, Gurudev Tagore Chair of Comp. literature, Institute of Science (Managed by Govt. of Maharashtra) etc.
Hostels: With 7 hostels providing boarding solutions for approximately 550 students, the rooms are allocated strictly on the basis of first come and first serve.
Research: The University give great importance to research and publishing papers with the official site providing an enriching collection of papers and thesis produced by the various faculties of the University.
Distance Learning: The Directorate of Correspondence Courses was established in the year 1971-82 and was upgraded as the “Institute of Distance Education”. It offers various courses including B.A., B.Com, M.A., M.Com., M.A.-Education, M.Sc.(Maths), P.G.D.F.M. & P.G.D.O.R.M. Admissions start in the second week of July. Exams are held in the month of March/April for all the courses of IDOL excluding B. Sc. IT, M.Sc. IT and MCA courses in which semester wise examinations are conducted.
