Costa Rica Passport InformationCosta Rican Government issues Costa Rican passports to its citizens who wish to travel outside Costa Rica. The passport is valid for 6 years currently and prior to 2006, it was valid for 10 years. The citizens of Costa Rica born in the homeland and the children of Costa Ricans who stay outside the country are entitled to receive Costa Rican passport. All children born in Costa Rica become eligible for procuring a Costa Rican citizenship. This is an important mile stone because Costa Rican citizenship proof is an important document submitted while applying for a passport.
The Costa Rican passport has a dark blue cover outside the passport. The Costa Rican coat of arms is emblazoned in the middle of the front cover of the Costa Rican passport. Above the emblem, the term “Republica De Costa Rica” and “Central America” is engraved. Below the emblem, the term ‘Passport’ is given both in English and French. All this is printed in glided looking letters.
The Costa Rican citizens enjoy the privilege of visiting nearly 108 countries and territories for short term tourist interest either through visa free access or visa-on-arrival process. While applying for Costa Rican passport the filled out passport application form should be submitted with all the necessary documents such as birth certificate, marriage certificate if any, proof of Costa Rican citizenship and certificate of naturalization if the individual has changed his or her citizenship, passport size photograph and the passport processing fee. The Costa Rican citizens staying outside Costa Rica can procure the passport by applying to the Costa Rican consulate or embassy in that particular country. The official passport is issued to diplomats and government officials who travel abroad for diplomatic missions, representing Costa Rican Government. The processing fee for these passport is generally not collected.
