Festivals of Majuli
Virtually every single person on the island is involved in the three-day long raas festival, depicting the life of Krishna. People from hundreds of kilometres away come to celebrate this festival, including a number of expatriate members of community. The Vaishnavite satras have also honed certain art and craft traditions, which can now be found only here. In Natun Samuguri satra for example, one can still find the craft of mask-making; and in the Kamalabari satra the finest boats are made.
Special events in the Majuli Festival are organized during festivals days. In the cultural programmes, inhabitants of the island participate in the various classical cultural and traditional groups. The most important festival, as for the rest of Assam, is Bihu, which also initiate the season for agriculture. The merriments include dances accompanied on lusty and wild beats of Pepa (buffalo hornpipe) and Dhol. People adorn traditional attires like Gamocha, Dhoti and Mekhala, Chadar.
In November, attending the ‘Tea festival’ is a unique experience, it offers holidays for combining visits to Golf, Tea Gardens, and Cruises of River. In April, Rongali Utsav is celebrated in the areas around the Brahmaputra river for the celebration of vibrant fertility cult. Various satras have their own specific celebrations and if one wants to visit the island during one of such times, travel plans can be made according to them. These fairs and festivals happen all year round.
Cultural programmes continue with the participation of various traditional and classical cultural troupes of Assam and troupes from rest of the country, in addition to rich cultural heritage of Majuli. Exhibitions are held to demonstrate various Assamese products specially designed and prepared by experts artistes highlighting traditional glory of the island. Assamese and tribal dishes of Majuli are made available during food festivals.
