Israel Passport Information

Israel issues Israeli passport to its citizens who wish to travel abroad. Israel also permits its citizens to hold foreign passports but demands an Israeli passport while entering or leaving Israel. For bilingual Israelis aged above 18 years can hold the passport for 10 years. Israeli passports have navy blue cover with Israeli coat of arms emblazoned on the front cover. Below the emblem, the word “Passport” is engraved in both Hebrew and English. Further all the information is printed in both the languages. An important note to remember is that Hebrew is written from left to right and therefore Israeli passports are opened from the right end. The data page of the Israeli passport ends with a machine readable zone.

Israeli nationals and those who hold an Israeli passport are not allowed to pass through several nations some nations do not even accept a passport with an Israeli visa stamp on it. Further the Israeli government also prohibits its nationals from visiting a number of world countries with whom it does not have a smooth relationship. Countries such as Algeria, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and United Arab Emirates do not permit those who hold an Israeli passport. But if an Israeli national is bent upon visiting these countries then a security clearance from that particular nation should be received. In case of Iran, it doesn’t allow the Israelis to set foot on their land.
Countries like Austria, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the US allows the Israeli citizens to possess two passports to avoid the restraints with respect to Israel. Further Israeli law pronounces the countries like Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and Saudi Arabia as enemy countries. Hence until you receive a special permission from Ministry of Interior you cannot visit these countries. Iran has been recently added to this list.

Tourist Information and Accommodations
Jorhat is well connected by air, with daily flights from Guwahati, and four flights a week from Calcutta. From Guwahati, Jorhat is a seven-hour bus ride. Buses leave early mornings and at nights. One can take the bus or a hired taxi to the Nimati Steamer Ghat from where ferry services ply.

Passenger ferries from Nimatighat depart at 10.30am and 3pm,  returning at 7.15am and 2pm. Buses meet the arriving ferries and then drive to Garamur via Kamalabari, where three-wheelers are easier to rent.

Majuli does not have a developed infrastructure for tourism. There are no hotels. Some satras have guestrooms. If you write in advance, they would certainly be available. The Satras that have such facilities and can deal with visitors easily are Natun Kamalabari, Uttar Kamalabari, Auniati (where monks are keen to show their museum of Ahom royal artefacts), Bhogpur and Dakhinpat. The first two are walking distance from Kamalabari. The second two are slightly further afield (about six kilometers away), and Dakhinpath is at one end of the island. In case you wish to go to Dakhinpath, there is a ferry from Neemati direct to Dakhinpath as well.

In addition to the Satra facilities, there are Inspection Bungalows at some points on the island (the one at Kamalabari is well located), and a Circuit House at Garamur, which is the sub-divisional headquarters. For the Inspection Bunglows and Circuit House, you could write to the Sub-Divisional Officer, Garamur, Majuli, Assam.

There are twenty-one Satras on the island - several of them still very active in the tradition and training of dance, drama, music, art and craft. One can hire a boat and cruise down the river in the early morning, bird-watching; and also visit fields and homes to see the cultivation and weaving.

Economy of Majuli
The Economy of Majuli is diversified and mainly dependant on self sufficient sectors. The main industry is agriculture, with paddy being the chief crop. Majuli has a rich and diverse agricultural tradition, with as many as a hundred different varieties of rice grown, all grown without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Kharif crop cultivators were uncertain due to flood inundation till construction of embankment, which now have protected the crops from floods where no breach opening is there. Rabi crop is more successful and people are very dependant on it. Main crops grown in Majuli are Rice, Maize, Wheat, other Cereals, Black Gram, Vegetables, Fruits, other food crops, Cotton, Jute, Castor, sugarcane etc. Among the fascinating arrays of rice produced are the Komal Saul, a unique type of rice that can be eaten just after immersing the grains in warm water for fifteen minutes, and usually eaten as a breakfast cereal; the bao dhan, that grows under water, and is harvested after ten months and the Bora saul, a sticky brown rice used to make the traditional cake known as pitha.

Other sectors which are vastly prevalent in Majuli to uplift economic condition of people are pisciculture, pottery, boat-making, cattle/dairy farming and others like:
Handicrafts/furniture: Bamboo craft and cane works are main handicraft trades.

Handloom: Women of Majuli are expert weavers and weave their own cloths. Mishing, women make a world famous fabric called "Mirizim" which is known for exotic designs and pleasing colour combination. Although largely a non-commercial occupation, it keeps many of the inhabitants occupied. Weaving is exquisite and intricate with the use of a variety of colours and textures of cotton and silk, especially 'muga' silk.

Sericulture: Around 20 villages depend on sericulture by producing raw silk, endi, as well as value added products. Handloom is a major occupation among the distaff population of the villages.

Festivals of Majuli - Accommodation Travel Agent Hotels Guest House

Festivals of Majuli

Virtually every single person on the island is involved in the three-day long raas festival, depicting the life of Krishna. People from hundreds of kilometres away come to celebrate this festival, including a number of expatriate members of community. The Vaishnavite satras have also honed certain art and craft traditions, which can now be found only here. In Natun Samuguri satra for example, one can still find the craft of mask-making; and in the Kamalabari satra the finest boats are made.

Special events in the Majuli Festival are organized during festivals days. In the cultural programmes, inhabitants of the island participate in the various classical cultural and traditional groups. The most important festival, as for the rest of Assam, is Bihu, which also initiate the season for agriculture. The merriments include dances accompanied on lusty and wild beats of Pepa (buffalo hornpipe) and Dhol. People adorn traditional attires like Gamocha, Dhoti and Mekhala, Chadar.

In November, attending the ‘Tea festival’ is a unique experience, it offers holidays for combining visits to Golf, Tea Gardens, and Cruises of River. In April, Rongali Utsav is celebrated in the areas around the Brahmaputra river for the celebration of vibrant fertility cult. Various satras have their own specific celebrations and if one wants to visit the island during one of such times, travel plans can be made according to them. These fairs and festivals happen all year round.

Cultural programmes continue with the participation of various traditional and classical cultural troupes of Assam and troupes from rest of the country, in addition to rich cultural heritage of Majuli. Exhibitions are held to demonstrate various Assamese products specially designed and prepared by experts artistes highlighting traditional glory of the island. Assamese and tribal dishes of Majuli are made available during food festivals.

People of Majuli
A visible living tradition of men and nature relationships that have evolved over centuries tightens the strings of this tiny self-sufficient island. Diverse ethnicities have collaborated and converged into a single economic unit. The island is the Abode of Assamese Vaishnavite Culture religion, preserved in the Vaishnavite Monasteries called Sattras (a National Classical Dance form of India, the Sattriya Dance, evolved in the Sattras of Majuli).

Majuli is administered as a sub-division under Jorhat district consisting of 3 blocks. This civil sub-division is now comprised of two development Blocks, the Majuli Development Block and the Uzani Majuli Development Block and three Tehsils (Mauza) Ahatguri, Kamalabari, and Salmora. There are about 240 villages, at the centre of each is a Namghar, where villagers gather very regularly to sing and pray.

It is the most important public place for the villagers. This is the place where most important socializing, negotiations and decisions of the entire village are taken and their cultural and economic relationships with other villages are scrutinized. After the rituals of song an devotional dances are complete, issues concerning the village such as auctioning of fishing rights, the course of action with the raised amount of money, and other topics of significance to the community as a whole are brought up an discussed.

The inhabitants are expert navigators by boat; their expertise is most visible during the monsoon season when they navigate the turbulent waters of the Brahmaputra. It requires skill and courage, deft handling of the boat and clarity of the routes involved. The people of the island are peace-loving and innocent. However, like a lot of other agitated and disturbed areas in the north-east of India, extremism is also a major concern in the region. The insurgent group of this part of the country, the ULFA, has a wide network in the region.

About Majuli
Majuli is the largest freshwater mid-river deltaic island in the world, located in Assam, India. Majuli is derived from the original Sanskrit word "madhya juli," meaning middle of two rivers or channels. Elusive and unstable as a child born of death and destruction, Majuli (or ‘Majoli’ in Assamese) is a small island flanked by the Brahmaputra river in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti (an anabranch of the Brahmaputra), joined by the Subansiri River in the north. Born because of a catastrophic flood that resulted from a series of earthquakes in the 17th century, the island is a significant feature of the historical texts from that age. As a result of the flood, the Brahmaputra split into two anabranches—one flowing along the original channel and the other flowing along the Burhidihing channel, which, even since then have seen many shifts and changes.

Majuli has been the cultural capital of Assamese civilization since the 16th century. Sankardeva, a 16th century social reformer, preached a monotheist form of Hinduism called as Vaishnavism and established monasteries and hermitages on the islet. The island soon became the leading centre of Vaishavinism. After the arrival of the British, the island was under the rule of the British till India gained independence.

The landscape is contemplative and pure, shifting yet steady; rice fields, water meadows, and fish traps are aplenty. The locals are mostly tribal folk; the Mishing tribes from Arunachal Pradesh and from the Deori and Sonowal Kacharis. The only mode of association to the outside world is a ferry service, which operates twice a day from Jorhat. In spite of that, commercialization has left a significant wake in the form of schools, colleges, and medical institutions.

Majuli is a hotspot for flora and fauna, harbouring many rare and endangered species including migratory birds that arrive in the winter season. The island is almost pollution-free owing to the lack of polluting industries and chronic rainfall. It is shrinking due to erosion because of the large embankments built in neighbouring towns upriver to prevent erosion there during the monsoon season. The upshot is a backlash of the tempestuous Brahmaputra's fury on the islet, eroding most of the area. Surveys show that in 15 – 20 years from now, Majuli would cease to exist. Like a line in a poem, it will soon be wiped out of the map by a wave of a mighty river.
